Maps by John Speed, 1610/11

John Speed's Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain was first published in 1611, using maps originally engraved to accompany Speed's History of Great Britain (1608-10).  There were many further editions of this very popular atlas throughout the seventeenth century and well into the eighteenth.  These different editions can be distinguished by the publisher's imprint and by other details such as the style of printing on the reverse.  The maps measure approximately 20 x 15 inches.
