Carlisle born
Nutter, used the sketchbook of his tutor, Robert Carlile, to paint a
series of views of 18th century Carlisle for an exhibition 'Carlisle
in the Olden Days' which was held in 1830. The exhibition
proved such a success that Nutter commissioned lithographic versions of
his paintings which were published in 1835 under the same title.
'Carlisle in the Olden Days' was issued in three qualities, the
top quality being hand coloured in Nutter's studio.
